A CHEF’S KNIFE

Cover art for a short story called A Chef's Knife. It is mostly text comprised of the the story title in a soft blue and Dungeon Divers United's logo.

It’s dinner time at the campsite. Is it your favorite time, considering these meals happen so rarely when on such a long quest? It could be.

You’ve been investigating a series of underground caves and their connected tunnels, searching for several missing people from the nearby town. It’s been long days of searching, mostly barren of results and of action.

That is with one exception. You had a run in with a weak, almost powerless sorcerer hellbent on obtaining demonic powers. It’s all he wanted to talk about when you pressed him for information about the missing townsfolk.

This dusty and sullen sorcerer quickly determines you have nothing to offer him at the moment. Without warning, an energy field opens up like a door behind him and he falls backward through it.

The spell was hastily cast by someone so preoccupied that he forgot an entire bag behind. Lucky for you! Sort of. The only thing that wasn’t garbage in the bag was a chef’s knife. So you took it.

Back to present time, and dinner prep. As you clumsily use the chef’s knife to rough chop some vegetables, you notice some groaning noises that sound faint and almost in your head.

As you carve into the last pungent onion you hear someone shout “Enough!” You toss the knife wildly down onto the cutting board because it feels like the damned thing bit you.

You take a look at your hand. A fresh bite mark upon the inside of your palm confirms your pain.

You hear the same voice speaking to you. “I’m not for food prep! The man who dropped the bag I was in has trapped my soul and the others you’re looking for in common objects. I’m a damn chef’s knife right now. You left most of us back there in the bag. Our bodies are still somewhere down in the caves you’ve been looking in.

That sorcerer has been trading our trapped souls for power, but the demons he’s been trading with have been siphoning off his power with every deal. Help us put a stop to his madness, please!”

☾ So, how will you proceed?

  1. Cancel dinner and head to the caves.

  2. Ice your palm. The bite hurts.

  3. Ask the knife to tell you how this happened.

  4. Ask the knife about the sorcerer.

  5. Bring the chef’s knife back to the cutting board and finish dinner (with gloves on).

  6. Leave.
