Random Synth Tables

This is a random roll table for starting a song with different sounds. It's red with a photo of a tower, and the text is in white.

Break out your d6, it’s time to write that song you’ve been dying to produce.

Why random tables for music? Why not?

There are tables for dungeon generation, character backstories, name generation and more in the world of TTRPGs. That got me thinking, how are we randomizing our music creation? Where are our random synth sounds tables?

These thoughts led me to playing around with Adobe Express to create the synth table image shown above.

Usually when I write music or create atmospheres I go in with a plan. Yet room is always left for chance to steer the course of the production, because that’s where I find the joy that slays stagnation.

It typically appears when I’m using modular synthesis to create samples for the production, and when the sound I want isn’t the sound I’m getting, that’s when I know a pivot is needed. That’s when going with the flow might not only save time, but the song itself.

A black and white photo of dice and modular synth cables.

The dice go with the modular synth patch cables here in the dungeon.

Look, this idea was executed on quickly and there’s much work to sort out, for example are these just going to be for synths or for all instruments? We’ve got a corner of the dungeon set up and dedicated to extracting the essence of this method.

If this is a feature you want to see more of on the site please say so on socials or through the contact form. I’ve started working on a lot of these tables, with the end goal of collecting them and releasing the best tables as a collection in book form.

*Please note - the image used in this table is from Adobe Express. Future tables will get original art once I can get a photoshoot in or a few new illustrations done.

Okay, go roll a critical hit song already! You can use the roller below if your d6 is out of reach.
