SUNVOID | A TTRPG Adventure Hook About Dungeons, Stargates, And Star Sorcery
Our Hearts Darkened In The Sun's Void
Seance Prism

☾ In the age of The Obsidian Empire, during the cursed season of everwinter that seems to have become most seasons, you find yourself in a position most peculiar. In all your years studying and woodshedding, perfecting your crafts, none have asked you to step into a role of leadership. Until now.

Two years ago the sun became blackened in its center. It rendered the world into an almost permanent state of frost, forever in a frigid cycle where most living things battle for light, food, and hope. The undead and the evil spirits thrive because of this, leaving a wake of horrors behind for all left alive to deteriorate in.

The evil in men is rewarded for their predations on the weak, and so great has this cycle of pain become, that the minds of common and good folk have been poisoned, and dimmed.

It used to be that the more intelligent and rational people were allowed the freedom to study and advance society. Now that irrationality spreads like disease you can't afford to visit the libraries and wizards, for even they have their hands full keeping peace and hope alive.

Your kingdom's remaining leaders and elders have secretly held meetings regarding a path forward to determine the cause of the Sunvoid and to heal the star's gaping wound.

The secretive group has spent weeks looking for the best vessels to fulfill this task, searching for those with sharp wit, knowledge of the world, and fight left in them. They sent Garron Oscilledes, an aged warrior, to deliver a scroll of declarations to you. It defines their wishes, their demands, and the next steps for you to take.

Upon handing you the damned thing, Garron apologies for your burden with tears in his eyes. You don't have to accept this mission, but then again, do you really have a choice? You've spent your years studying and training for something like this, and now you've been called to action and to face untold hardships for the rest of society. You were made for this.

More than halfway down the scroll you come across a carefully worded accusation made against the star sorcerers, an enlightened group seeking an understanding of the cosmos. The common folk found a scapegoat and have conflated study of the stars and cosmic magic with control of the stars.

Spirit Sword

You have studied with several star sorcerers in the past. You know they keep stargates and portals to other places and cosmic planes, and that their powers are made of particles and stardust among other twinkling delights found in the cold of space.

You also know, profoundly and without a doubt, that they are incapable, with sorcery or technology, of creating a Sunvoid. They simply cannot block out a star.

On and on you read, and your mission becomes clearer than the coveted sea crystals of Santalissia. You need to find a way to clear the accusations levied onto the star sorcerers, gain their trust, and convice enough of them to take you to one of the stargates deep underground and send you into the uncharted depths of space. It's the only way you'll be able to get closer to the Sunvoid and determine the cause of this everdark.

Good thing you have a few friends still alive and barricaded in the Silver Tower, already at work on the cause of the Sun's dilemma. The barrier to your quest is that your leaders have stupidly proclaimed their accusations against the star sorcerers as fact across the lands, and now the entire world is against them. They have been forced into hiding and trust no one outside of their circle.

Getting to the Silver Tower is a formidable task itself. Once there you'll have to play politician with the elder sorcerers just to get inside. Then you will require a group of at least three willing students of the stars to navigate you through one of their dungeons to the stargate, and to work the machine without killing you. Then you'll have to face the unknown regions of space, discover the cause of the void, and fix the hole in the sun's heart. Can you even muster the willpower to take the first steps?

You would be a symbol of hope, a beacon of reason, a bearer of heavy truths if you take this on. The stars themselves would thank you.

If you succeeded?

You would become legend.

☾ So, how will you proceed?

  1. Gather your things from home and prepare for travel. Head to the Silver Tower and obtain the aid of the Star Sorcerers.

  2. Go to your those who fated you to this task, and refuse. You'd rather face the consequences of that decision than risk your life further.

  3. Think. You'll need more than you have for the journey. Head to the shops in town.

  4. Hire some of the traveling bandits in the area to escort you to the Silver Tower. Very risky, but you'll be safe if they don't kill you.

  5. Look for the dungeon that contains the stargate you require and operate it yourself. You have a dimmed knowledge of star sorcery yourself.

  6. Leave. Go into hiding and live your remaining days like everyone else, counting them until the monstrous evils the Sunvoid has unleashed finally get you too.
