THE YOUNG MAGE

Artwork for 'The Young Mage', a short campaign starting story idea. It's the title and DDU logo on a dark purple to black gradient background.

You’re an inexperienced mage filled with the kind of over-confidence that only the combination of too much untested knowledge and youth can produce. Your bravado never falters, even as a thick blanket of stillness drapes over the surrounding woods.

The path becomes more narrow and twisted as you continue to climb in elevation. You hardly notice as you continue to navigate it with ease, at least a full day ahead of schedule.

It’s hard not to smile to yourself as you marvel over just how easy this entire journey has been. You knew your professors had been exaggerating about the dangers.

As the shadows lengthen, a deep chill begins to settle into your bones and you realize that you haven’t heard the background noise of birdsong in quite some time now. You push these thoughts aside.

Buoyed by your rapid progress, you don’t notice the numerous sets of blinking green eyes in the darkness. Nor do you notice the trap until it’s too late. A sharp snapping sound is the only warning you have before the path is suddenly spinning round and round above your head. As you hang dangling by your feet from a large silver oak, your mind races to find your limited options here. You need to think quickly.

☾ So, how will you proceed?

  1. Talk your way out of this. And remember to be nice! [Requires Charisma check].

  2. Use your dagger to cut the ropes. If you can reach it. [Requires Dexterity check].

  3. Cast your last scroll of fireball and hope that only the ropes of this trap burn.

  4. Cast your last scroll of fireball towards the glowing eyes and hope that’s enough.

  5. Use your head, young mage. Study the situation and find your path forward. [Requires Intelligence check + any bonuses being a mage grant you]

  6. Leave. Just kidding. You aren’t going anywhere.
